Fit Bit “Born-Again Alcoholic?”
Dear Kimberly,
Can a practicing
alcoholic be born again?
Sincerely,
Fran
Dear Fran,
All repentant
sinners can be born again. The problem
with alcoholism or any other addiction is, the substance or behavior becomes
the afflicted’s God. This may seem a bit
extreme, but when a person is suffering with alcoholism, he/she thinks about
drinking and protecting his/her ability to drink first and foremost. The addicted become a slave to the
alcohol. When we are born again, we
receive the Holy Spirit, which is from God who helps us want to obey God’s laws
and love with a pure heart. If an
alcoholic goes back to drinking after being born again, they are convicted in
their hearts of their sin, but often still unable to quit. We are all
sinners. One sin is no worse then
another. I believe Alcoholics can be
born again, go back to drinking and still be saved. Yet, if they go back to drinking they will
not have the freedom and peace in their hearts, that Jesus died to give
them. All Born Again Christians continue
to sin. It is not our behavior that
saves us it is what Jesus did for us on the cross, which saves us.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have
everlasting life.”
John 10:10 “The thief
cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill and to destroy; I am come that they
might have life, and that they might have it abundantly.”
John 14:26-27 “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the
Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all
things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. 27 Peace I leave
with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it
be afraid.”
Be fit and be blessed,
Kimberly
