Recently two people whom I love have both lost 30 pounds.  One did it as a starvation thing over 19 days.  The other did it with a continued to commitment to weight watchers.  I believe slower, more methodical change in thinking and desire will be more likely to keep the weight off.
Over eating, over spending, negative attitudes, laziness all start in the rationalization of our heads and the desires of our hearts.

Proverbs 23:7  “As a man thinks in his heart so shall he be.”

Both of these people had to “change the way they think”, and what they desired.  Do you have something in your life where you could use a shift in thinking and desire?  Most of us do.  How do we change?

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
If I want to change anything in my life I have to desire my new choice rather then my old.  An example;

I chose to desire to go cross-country skiing verses stay in the warm house.
I chose to desire eat more vegetables then sweets.
I chose to desire an intimate relationship with God over drinking.

In order to change fast or slow; Decide in your head to desire your new lifestyle more then your old one and then continually keep your thoughts on what TO DO!

Negative thoughts don’t work.  Think about your new life style choices in a positive light.
An Example;
Negative; What ever I do today I am not going to eat chocolate cake.
Positive; Today I am going to eat three serving of fruit before I have any other form of sweets.
