Fit Bit (I used to be able to do this)

Fit Bit (I used to be able to do this)
Dear Kimberly,

I used to be able to do this.  I was dieting and exercising and I had lost a lot of weight.  Then I quit.  I have gained 90% of my weight back.  I need help.  But I just can’t seem to get going.  How do I get going again?

Sincerely,

I used to be able to do this

Dear “Used to”,

You can do it!  You already have at least once in your life.

Philippians 4:13  “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

What skills did you have when you were on track, verses now?
List them and post them prominently.

Most likely, you took the time to plan your food choices and had good quality fresh fruits and vegetables readily available.  You also most likely were drinking lots of water (64 oz. /day is the general recommendation), and set aside time for some light exercise.  If you start concentrating on these three things alone you will find yourself getting back on track.  Concentrate on what will work, and let go of the thoughts that will get you in trouble, such as I’m to busy for this planning stuff, I will just grab some fast food…It won’t matter that much, I’ll start tomorrow. I can’t do this any way; I’m older now…it’s harder.  Recognize this type of toxic thinking and STOP IT!  Concentrate on what to do.  Let go of your mess-ups and keep pressing forward toward the mark.    Keep on keeping on, regardless of how many times you try and fail, eventually you will get it back.

Hebrew 12:1  “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

Be fit and be blessed,

Kimberly

Fit Bit (internal motivation)

Fit Bit (internal motivation)
Dear Kimberly,
At work they are starting a Fitness challenge.  I joined in.  I thought it would help me motivate to lose weight.  All it has done so far is make me feel guilty that I still lack internal motivation.  How do I get pumped up about this?  I need to lose weight.
Sincerely,
Lacking internal motivation

Dear Needing Internal Motivation,

Very rarely can something from outside us motivate us on the inside.  Sure it happens, A drunk quits drinking while s/he is scared they will lose their job or spouse, a person quits smoking when the Doctor tells them they are going to die. These fears, or external motivators can last for a little while.  In order for true change we need a true internal desire or perseverance does not come.  The only way I know to change the inside is to ask God for His help.  Pray, He can help you see your body as His temple.  Pray, He can help you moment by moment make decisions that will honor Him.

Mathews28: 20  “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world.” Amen

Each time you pick up a doughnut instead of fruit, chips instead of the vegetables, etc.… God is with you!  Listen to His ever-present voice.  Each time you make a decision in the right direction it helps you with the internal strength you need to keep on keeping on.  Most of us cannot do a change perfectly immediately, so regardless of how many times you may back slide, brush it off and keep trying.

Three basis steps for behavioral change;
1.     Make sure your behavioral change lines up with Gods’ word, post scriptures to support you, and ask for His help.
2.     Find reasons you like your new life better then your old ways and concentrate on the benefits you receive by walking the walk.
3.     Continually accept the forgiveness Jesus died to give you and keep pushing toward the mark.
If you want to have this Fitness challenge to have lasting affect on your life, concentrate on the true rewards you will receive by treating your body as His temple verse your trashcan.  (See Corinthians 6:19)

Be fit and be blessed,
Kimberly

Fit Bit (questioning AA)

Fit Bit (questioning AA)
Dear Kimberly,

In an article you had in Christian News dated Oct. 2012, you told people to join AA, as a possible help for their alcoholism.  I disagree with you.  I find that they always confess, “ I am an alcoholic” I think that keeps people sick.  Please be careful with your recommendations.

Sincerely,

Questioning AA

Dear Questioning,

In recovery it’s important to confess our faith, concentrate on what is good and working, not the past and the pain.   Jesus died that we may be freed from the pain and live in His promise.   When we confess with our mouth over and over again what is wrong we internalize it.  I do not introduce myself to people an alcoholic unless it can help them.  In AA people introduce themselves according to their disease to help others in the room, understand where they have been and what their battle is.  I have heard people introduce themselves as “ grateful recovering alcoholics” I like that introduction better.

AA doesn’t work for everybody, but it can be good place to start.  There are AA meetings all over the country and the common goal is to quit drinking.   I found help in AA.

Personally, I did not have success with AA alone.  I needed to and continually need to focus on Jesus Christ, what He has done for me, how beautiful He has made me, regardless of my past.  This truth is what keeps me well.  I stay well by living in His promises and giving Him my past and my pain.  Every day I confess with my mouth, “ Thank you Lord for making me your beautiful child.  Please help me be a blessing to you and others today.”

John 10:10  “ The thief cometh not but for to steal, and to kill and to destroy; I am come that they may have life, and that they might have it more abundantly

Be fit and be blessed,

Kimberly

PS.  You may want to find a Christian recovery group in your area

Fit Bit (finding comfort in food)

Fit Bit (finding comfort in food)
Dear Kimberly,

I am afraid I will never get this right.  I want to be a better person.  I am trying to be nice and take care of myself, but things are blowing up all around me.  Every time I get stressed I find food.  How can I stop this?  I am so far out of control; I fear I will never get this right.

Sincerely,

Finding Comfort in Food

Dear Comfort food,

Things blowing up, all around you is part of life in this world.  Don’t expect heaven here on earth. (Quote from my friend Pastor Randy Larson) We all have good days, and crazy days.  Jesus loves us day-by-day, moment-by-moment regardless of our mess.  In order to stop your feeding frenzy during times of stress, try trusting God in all things.  Whatever the craziness, He can handle it and will in His perfect timing.  Do you believe that?  If you truly believe that in your heart of hearts then practice it.  When you witness something blowing up, simply exhale, step back, pray and trust God.  If you start thinking about comforting yourself with food, STOP, PRAY AND TRUST.  Jesus loves you and will provide for you and the situation that is blowing up.  The opposite of faith is fear.  Find comfort in your faith not food.  Try putting your favorite scripture verses on the fridge and make a deal with yourself that you will read and think about at least one verse, before you take your first bite.

Isaiah 41:10  “Fear thou not; for I am with thee;  be not dismayed; for I am thy God;  I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

You will get this right, keep on keeping on through the help of Jesus Christ.  Remember, God loves you, regardless of your behavior, you are saved by grace!

Be fit and be blessed,

Kimberly

PS I have attached a few helpful scripture verses…The Bible is full of them!!!
